Stock Photos..

Wed Jul 15, 2009, 9:59 PM
I wanted to do an update regarding stock photography. I am not sure how many of my watchers use stock photos in their work, but I have a proposition for those of you who do.

As many of you know, last year I spent a month in Europe photographing my heart out- some models, but mostly architecture and fine landscapes. I came back with over 3,500 RAW images but have barely had any time to work on any of them. In fact, I think that I might have gotten to maybe 15-20 seriously. It's a shame to let some of this work go to waste because I am not sure when and where I will have time to get to many of these projects with my schedule. I'm almost afraid they'll get lost in time and the archives of my ever expanding hard drive collection (over 8TB in work - only 1-5% worked on)...

Soooo.. my proposition is as follows - I'd like to offer some of my untouched raw work up as stock photos for some of you to mess around with - to see what you can do with it. This is something that I have mixed feeling about - sending my babies out into the world to be cared for by others, at the same time, curious and excited to see what some of you amazing artists can with in collaboration.. I'd like some opinions. If I do this - it will be with my non-model work for starters.

What do you all think? Any interest?

I use stock once in a while, my hardest thing I find is trying to decided on what to do. I wouldn't mind trying........(I never use anything for commercial purposes ever, credit as much as I can & anything you want to be in the credits & you can do whatever you want with it after, if its any good........just in case you are wondering!!!)

The hardest part about using stock photos is finding one (or many) that will physically work in the concept and won't require a ton of manipulating to fit into the scene. Physical file size is key. Too many members post super low res. stock photos which are basically useless for anything other than web work. Then factor in focus, perspective, lighting, etc. Can't tell you how many manipulation I've started but never finished because I couldn't find images that worked.

stock should be used as reference not taken as is. I use a lot of stock to help finish the idea. looking forward to seeing what you've got

Its not what you look at, but how you see it.

I use stock both as a part of photo-manipulation and references for traditional mediums. As said by others using stock is more or less finding the right stock to work for a piece. I tend to use bits and parts of a lot of stock and work them in together to create a new work. I would be very interested in using some of your images as stock but I would be using it as a PART of the finished piece not as the image altered :)

I remember a few of those locations were and I think you should just get your ass in gear and churn the pix out. I'm still waiting to see the evening ones from Windsor and Oxford. :)

Get to work! *cracks whip*

No, I remember. It was all you were talking about when you were out here. :)

BTW, I'm going to be in Winnipeg for Christmas, we should get together. Oh, and to keep this on topic, you can let me sort through your "stock" footage. :)
